Death Came Sudden To Ex-Auditor Theophilus G. TouVelle

Saturday Evening Closed Earthly Career of a Well-Known Citizen.

Theophilus G. TouVelle died at his home on North Main street last Sunday evening. Although he has been an invalid for some time as the result of a stroke of paralysis he was in his usual health and his death came suddenly and unexpectedly.

Mr. TouVelle was born in Bloomfield, Ohio, in the year 1832, and came with his parents to this county in 1847, where he has since resided as an honored citizen. In 1864 he was elected County Recorder to fill the unexpired term of John Johnson, and from that time until 1891 he held an almost unbroken tenure of office, filling with honor the offices of County Recorder, Clerk of the Courts and County Auditor.

Perhaps no other citizen of Mercer county has been thus honored by his fellow citizens and it can truly be said of him in this respect, "Well done, thou good and faithly servant."

In 1855, Mr. TouVelle was united in marriage to Sarah P. Langel and to this happy union two sons, Albert R. of Firth, Nebraska, and W. E., of this city, were born. In [illegible], Mr. TouVelle was again married, this time to Mary L. Phelps, a daughter of the late Judge Edward M. Phelps, of St. Marys. To this union one daughter, Louise B., was born.

Mr. TouVelle was an honored citizen, an upright man, a kind husband and an indulgent father and was liked and respected by all who knew him, and his acquaintance exended to every corner of this county.

For the past few years he has been engaged in the insurance business in this city, but owing to failing health the duties of the business fell largely upon his faithful daughter and devoted wife.

He was a sterling democrat and a great admirer of William Jennings Bryan, and when that distinguished Nebraskan was here at the Chautauqua last year he called to pay his respects to Mr. TouVelle at his home.

A good citizen, an upright and conscientious man has gone to his long last reward to await the coming of those who helped make his life worth living.

Funeral services were hel at his late home at 1 p.m. last Wednesday in charge of the Masonic fraternity of which he was an honored member. Dr. P. P. Pope, pastor of St. Paul's M. E. church, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was in beautiful North Grove cemetery. The funeral was largely attended and the floral offerings were the largest and finest ever seen in this city.

Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: T. P. TouVelle, of Sandusky; Mrs. W. W. TouVelle, of Wanscon,, Mrs. S. N. TouVelle, of Berea, Ky., and Albert R. TouVelle, of Firth, Nebraska. There were also a large number of residents from neighboring towns present who came to pay a last sad duty of respect to the memory of a man they honored in life and who in turn had honored them.
